UCDC Summer Program Overview

All UCDC participants (both in the Academic Internship Program and the Summer Program) live in the UC Washington Center the heart of D.C. The Center houses up to 280 students from all UC campuses per quarter and provides state of the art facilities like high speed internet and Wi-Fi throughout the Center, and the convenience of weekly cleaning services in fully furnished apartments. Grocery stores and a post office are within walking distance while a small fitness center, laundry facilities, and a student computer lab are located within the building. All UC Irvine participants are required to live in the UC Washington Center, which helps students to form a tight-knit community and meet students from other campuses.

Students live in two bedroom, one bathroom apartments, with two students sharing a bedroom, and a total of four students sharing an apartment. All bedrooms consist of an extra-long twin bed, drawers, desk, lamp, clock radio and one closet per person. The living room is furnished with a couch, coffee tables, lamps, and a TV with access to major networks and news channels. Local phone service is available.

The kitchen comes with a refrigerator, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, dishes, silverware, glassware, cookware, and kitchen utensils. The Washington Center has some bake ware that can be checked out (e.g. cake pan) but if there is something that you use frequently (e.g. rice cooker), you may wish to bring your own.

Apartment Items to Bring or Purchase in D.C.

    • Pillow, blanket/comforter, and extra-long twin sheets
    • Towel(s)
    • Hangers
    • Shower caddy
    • Paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, etc.)
    • Landline phone (if you wish to use the local service)
    • Cleaning products for kitchen
    • Ethernet cable (if bringing a laptop and don’t want to rely on Wi-Fi)

Worried about getting out of your housing at UCI to go to D.C.?

If you live on-campus:

    • Arroyo Vista, Campus Village, Mesa Court or Middle Earth residents: UCI Housing will allow you be released from your housing contract at no additional charge if you follow the proper procedures to do so, which includes contacting Student Housing by the end of the 7th week of the quarter prior to your participation in UCDC to inform them of your participation in UCDC and intent to leave for a quarter. If you will return to UCI in the same academic year, you may be able to return to on-campus housing at UCI (if needed) but will need to make your request to Student Housing no later than the 7th week of the quarter (while you’re in DC).
    • Vista del Campo, Vista del Campo Norte, or Camino del Sol residents: you are allowed to sublet your room while you are in DC. Ask your leasing office about this policy, and to be put on their sublet list.

If you live off-campus:

    • The California Housing Board provides a forum for both UCDC and Education Abroad Program participants to share information about housing at UCI. This is an especially useful resource for students who need to find other students to sublet their room in their UCI apartment while in DC.
    • Uloop provides listings of UC Irvine off-campus housing options. Search for apartments and houses for rent, roommates, and sublets near UC Irvine.
    • Facebook pages and groups designed for UCI students to post their housing requests: UCI Housing, UC Irvine Housing, Housing, and UCI Housing, Sublets, and Roommates.
    • The Anteater Housing Network is an online housing and roommate finder that contains a number of listings for sublets and rooms in homes that do not require a 12 month commitment.
    • Housing Outreach Services has some useful off-campus housing information on their web site, including contact information for Student Housing Advisors who are available to help you.
